My family loves popcorn – especially The Goose. That is the main reason why we have Family Movie Night every Saturday. On Saturday nights, I break out our hot oil popcorn popper and make a huge bowl of popcorn for all of us to share.
There are times, however, when I just want a small bag of popcorn and don’t really feel like hauling out the big popper. That’s when I’m thankful for this trick I learned many years ago – use the microwave to make air popped popcorn.
Homemade Microwave Popcorn
1/4 cup popcorn kernels
Small paper bag
Fully open the paper bag, and pour the popcorn kernels into the bag. Fold the top of the bag and staple shut using one staple in the middle. (I know some people might not like the idea of using a staple in the microwave – I was hesitant at first, too – but I’ve been doing this for nearly seven years and I’ve never had a problem. If you really don’t want to use a staple, you can try tightly folding the bag so the steam doesn’t escape.)
Place the bag in your microwave and microwave on high until popping starts to slow – listen carefully, though, because this popcorn tends to burn quicker than traditional microwave popcorn.
Once the popcorn has finished popping, carefully open the bag and pour the popcorn into a bowl. Top with melted butter and salt (or your favorite popcorn topping) and enjoy!
