My family has always set out cookies for Santa and a piece of cheese for the Christmas mouse, but it wasn’t until The Goose was in preschool that we found out about reindeer food. His teacher handed out a small baggie with oatmeal and glitter and told us to sprinkle it in the driveway on Christmas Eve so that the reindeer would see the glitter shimmering in the moonlight and know to stop at our home.
Now, we make our own reindeer food. Because we have a lot of wildlife around our home, I’ve replaced the glitter with colored sugar crystals. It still shimmers in the moonlight. It still looks magical. And it is safe for the squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and the occasional white tail deer that wander through our yard.
1/2 Cup oatmeal (if you don’t have plain oats on hand, a packet of instant oatmeal will work just fine)
1-2 Tablespoons colored sugar (it’s Christmas, so I used red and green, but just use whatever you have on hand)
Mix the oatmeal and the colored sugar together and place in a small sandwich bag. Attach the tag with ribbon, and give to your child on Christmas Eve. (The sugar always settles at the bottom of the bag, so give it a little shake before sprinkling it on the driveway).
